Overlooking Skagway and our cruise ship

After our trip up to the White Pass Summit, we headed over to the meeting point where we were supposed to get picked up for a scooter tour we had booked. Unfortunately, there was a mix-up on their end (these things happen, even to travel advisors!), and they had no booking on their schedule for us. The man we talked to on the phone felt bad about the miscommunication and offered to pick us up himself, which he did. He took us to where the scooters were and gave us a quick lesson on how to ride them. He told us we could ride around on our own and take them wherever we wanted, but since there was a mix-up and we didn’t have a whole lot of time, he offered to take us on a tour of some of his favorite places in the area. He was a local who had lived in Skagway his whole life and had an idea of some beautiful scenery we could check out, so we decided to have him us show him around.

Nahku Bay (that is not the shipwreck, it was hidden behind some trees)

We took a little time driving around the property to get used to the scooters at first, but we soon got the hang of them. We then whizzed up Dyea Road, and thankfully there wasn’t too much traffic to contend with. Our first stop was at an overlook area with views of the entire city of Skagway and our ship in the port. Next we stopped at beautiful Nakhu Bay, where a Klondike gold rush shipwreck, The Canada, sits in its final resting place. The tide must have been high at the time we were there because we could only see just a little bit of the remains. Then we followed along the Taiya River a little further up the road to the outskirts of the mostly abandoned, former boomtown of Dyea. We pulled out our binoculars to try to spot some bears, known to frequent this river valley, but alas, it was a little too early in the season and they were likely still asleep. On the way back to Skagway, our guide showed us a freshwater stream where we filled our water bottles up with the freshest, sweetest water we had ever tasted!

A delicious freshwater stream!

We’re not really sure what kind of tour we would have undergone, had there not been a miscommunication, but we considered ourselves extremely lucky to have gotten a private tour of some of the incrediible places and experiences we may have missed. We had so much fun!
