Normally we try to steer away from the most popular tourist attractions when we travel; however, we heard so many great things about the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway that we decided to see what the fuss was. We were not disappointed!
The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway, known as “The Scenic Railway of the World”, was built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush. This narrow gauge railroad is an international historic civil engineering landmark. Built in 1898 to open the Klondike to gold seekers, this narrow gauge railway (originally stretching from Skagway, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in Canada) was completed in 1900 with the driving of the ceremonial Golden Spike in Carcross, Yukon.
On this train tour, we rode in a vintage passenger coach as we retraced the original route to the White Pass summit, passing Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, and Dead Horse Gulch, beginning at the tidewater in Skagway to the summit of the White Pass - a 2,888-foot elevation! Along the way we saw mountains, glaciers, gorges, waterfalls, and traveled through tunnels and over trestles.
Glad we didn't go over that bridge!
The breathtaking, panoramic views along the route are hard to describe — you just have to see them in person to know! We really enjoyed this relaxing train ride (so much that Marianne fell asleep at one point from the rocking of the train! 😆). This is an attraction that is great for all ages, and we highly recommend you check it out on your visit to Skagway.
